Why Updating Websites is Important

It is the first full week of a new year, and everyone is beginning to plan the year ahead: their holiday; their weekends; their parties. Where do they look to help plan these events? The internet.

Many people also have New Year’s resolutions to try something new. Whether they are looking to learn to dance, cook vegetarian food, sew, paint, hang glide etc they will most likely be looking it up on line.

So your events need to be on line – which is why updating websites is important. Need convincing more? Read on…

Shout About It!updating websites

If you run any kind of event, course, workshop or exhibition you need to make sure it is on your website now. If not you are losing potential business.

If you sell your products at craft fairs, via art galleries, at agricultural shows or at festivals, get that information on your website as soon as possible.

If you are exhibiting at wedding fairs, business conferences, trade fairs put it on your website and shout about it.

Why?

  1. Out-of date information gives out a bad impression – it could look like you are no longer trading or just unprofessional. It can also lead to disappointment – I don’t want to know that you ran a “Baking like Mary Berry” course in August 2014 – I want to know when the next one is!
  2. You are losing business – if people are looking up courses or workshops on line, they want to book it whilst they are looking – and these dark January nights are when they are looking. If they are planning a weekend away they might want to book a mountain-bike skills course as part of the weekend. Don’t miss out. Make it as easy as possible for people to book – preferably with a book and pay option in the course details.
  3. Putting events on your website is a really easy way to change your site. The more your website has updated information on, the more it is “seen” by search engines. Even if all you have is the date for an event, put that on your site. As more details are confirmed you can add them later.
  4. Events are a great subject for your social media and a good way to link your social media with your website.

Not only should you be putting your events, workshops, demonstrations etc on your website, you should be updating websites from external companies too.

If you are a member of the local tourist board you should be able to upload your events to their site. Likewise local papers have free listings and there will no doubt be a number of local sites you can add your events to: in York we have York Mix and One and Other York who have free listings.

You need to look out for specialist sites that are relevant to your business. If you are involved in a festival or other event with an umbrella organisation, make sure your event is on their website.

 101 Reasons Not to…

You probably have 101 reasons why you haven’t updated events on websites – starting with time, event details, technical skills, etc etc.  Why not ditch your excuses and just get on with it?
